The university caters to the academic demands of students by offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. The academic structure has a list of courses which are divided into various departments and faculties. The five prominent faculties include the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health. It has been a part of the Sheffield Medical School, Firth College, and Sheffield Technical School with a major focus on the technical field and science. It is also known to be one of the six original 'redbrick' civic universities and has a global outreach in the educational field equivalent to its academic heritage. The university began its classes with 114 students, and later on, the number of enrolments increased up to 1,000 students.
