History of Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (MIT)
Located in Cambridge, USA, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a well-renowned private research university. MIT was established on April 10, 1861, when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts awarded it its legal charter. This occurred two days before the Civil War began. Plans were prepared and monies obtained over the following several years, with the first classes commencing in 1865. MIT's first president, William Barton Rogers, came up with the concept. When Rogers articulated his idea for a "new polytechnic institute," he was a professor of Natural Philosophy at the College of William & Mary. Originally based in Boston's Back Bay, the Institute relocated to Cambridge in June 1916 after a 3-day alumni reunion. The university also has academic affiliations with the Association of American Universities, Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE), National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), Universities Research Association, 568 Group and more. Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of the top universities in Cambridge and is ranked #1 in the QS Global World Rankings 2021 and 2022. Furthermore, MIT is also backed by stunning rankings in THE World University Rankings 2022 and US News & World Report’s Best Global University Rankings 2022 that place MIT at #=5 and #2 respectively.
