History of The University Of Sydney

The University of Sydney was established in 1850 in Sydney, Australia as a public institution of higher education after the University of Sydney Act was passed on September 24, 1850, and the Governor Sir Charles Fitzroy signed it on October 1, 1850. The institution was established two years later, on October 11, 1852, in the Big Schoolroom of what is now Sydney Grammar School. The University was created on two fundamental principles: religious tolerance and academic merit-based admissions. The first premise guaranteed that students would be admitted regardless of their religious beliefs. The second is that students were admitted to university after completing an academic exam. USYD has a vast history covering many aspects of intellectual, scientific and socio-political life in Australia. The university is associated with Group of Eight, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Association of MBAs (AMBA) and many more.
