History of Monash University

Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958, and their first students began studying on their foundation campus in Clayton in 1961, becoming the first university established in the state of Victoria, Australia in over 100 years. It is also the second oldest university in the region. The growth from technology and science specialists to general university was rapid. It was accelerated by a merger with Chisholm Institute in 1990, which saw the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses become a part of the University. A year later the Victorian College of Pharmacy entered into a partnership with Monash that allowed the university to bring Parkville into its portfolio of campuses. Monash became the first Australian university to be approved to operate in China. After a partnership with Sichuan University faded in 2008, Monash continued to search for opportunities for growth in China. After months of negotiations, in 2012 Monash finally formed a landmark partnership with Southeast University (SEU) to open a joint graduate school. Monash University is affiliated with Group of Eight Universities, ASAIHL, World Health Summit, John Monash Science School, and Monash College. The university also ranks in the top 100 world universities in global league tables. QS World University Rankings 2022 and THE World University Rankings 2022 rank the university at #58 and #57 respectively. Additionally, Monash has been ranked #40 in the list of US News Best Global Universities Rankings 2022.
